Block x block
Like many cities around the world, Downtown Houston was at a crossroads. The pandemic reversed and flipped everything we thought about life, work, and civic centers, including how citizens utilized their everyday spaces. The downtown leadership team knew this, embraced the challenge, and put plans in place to direct their neighborhood towards the future. With a new vision and mission in place, Downtown Houston not only needed messaging to communicate the future goals of the neighborhood, it needed a creative framework for stakeholders to understand and embrace, and something for Houstonians to rally around.
There are many tasks and moving pieces, and tackling all at once would have resulted in confusion and frustration. Though the task at hand is large, the approach is specific and considered. While thinking about things holistically, Downtown Houston chose to break this process down into smaller, manageable pieces. This would allow projects to have the time and attention they need to succeed and prosper, and give Houstonians the chance to see progress made over time.
The icon represents the 4 main goals of the initiative: connect the city, multiply the number of visitors in Downtown Houston, help citizens feel a sense of ownership, and create a new-found love of the neighborhood.
The icon creates a repeating pattern that shows streets and blocks intersecting across the city.
